I plunk down in seat 17A, directly over the wing of the plane and glance around. There are several individuals that I don't have the foggiest idea, nor will ever get an opportunity to know. The plane murmurs to life as the motor pushes the 2000 pound mass down the runway. The plane quickens speed as it is lifted into the sky, leaving the recognizable ground and going into the new, open sky. During the flight I connect coolly with the steward or attendant, however never by and by. Sometimes, I sit close to an individual that I can identify with and interface with, conversing with them for all intents and purposes the whole time we are noticeable all around, astonished and marginally pitiful when hearing the pilot’s voice originate from the radio, advising everybody to â€Å"Put your plate tables up and your seat in the upstanding situation for landing,† showing a close to end to the discussion so completely delighted in. The Grapes Of Wrath Essays (1793 words) - Dust Bowl, U.S. Route 66

The Grapes Of Wrath David Rosen English 3H, Period 2 Mrs. Carmody September 26, 2000 The Inter-Chapters and Symbolism in The Grapes of Wrath Writers frequently utilize a wide range of composing styles and procedures while making their books. They utilize these specific techniques so as to make their accounts progressively graphic and more obvious. John Steinbeck utilizes numerous scholarly procedures in The Grapes of Wrath to enable the peruser to more readily comprehend the story. For example, by composing the between parts, Steinbeck frequently foretells the normal sections and the occasions that will happen in them. Another artistic apparatus utilized very well by Steinbeck is his utilization of imagery all through the whole novel. He can create a lot of images which can accommodate a more clear comprehension of the novel through things, for example, creatures, machines, and nature. In The Grapes of Wrath, a wide range of abstract strategies are utilized to additionally depict and enliven the novel, however the two that Steinbeck utilizes the most are the between parts and imagery. The between sections are an absolutely extraordinary creation by John Steinbeck. On account of the degree of portrayal that he composes with, these sections fit very well into the novel. Obviously, the writers objective is to have the peruser picture the cruel circumstances that the Joads and different families need to experience. By completely portraying each setting, this makes a progressively clear picture for the peruser. Additionally, these between sections contain an all the more a general picture with respect to what is happening during the timeframe of the Joads venture. While the normal parts are composed to recount to the particular story of the Joad family and report their excursion to California, the between sections, for the most part, compare with the story line of the novel. The between sections, in the end, become charming as the story advances. Sooner or later, as the story advances, the two unique kinds of parts gives the story a rhythmical example. The between sect ions are a key part in The Grapes of Wrath since they give backhanded remarks and show general circumstances which hint the individual disasters of the primary characters. These remarks and circumstances help give the peruser a comprehension of what the characters are looking through their excursion by either demonstrating allegorically their triumphs and battles or clarifying the historical backdrop of the period that they are living in. Section three is a between part. In this part, Steinbeck portrays a solid roadway (p. 20) that a land turtle battles to cross. The turtle has nearly arrived at his goal when a truck hits it. This chips its shell, and it is tossed on its back. The turtle at that point needs to battle with the entirety of its strength to turn around finished. In the long run the turtle flips back finished and proceeds on its excursion. This section speaks to the ceaseless battles and impediments that the Joads would need to adapt to all through the whole story. All t hrough the novel the Joads meet numerous hardships. They are driven away from their home, lose relatives, for example, the grandparents and Noah, work for low wages, and experience the ill effects of appetite, floods, and coldblooded partialities in California. Like the turtle, the Joads won't surrender and proceed with their excursion. Part five is another between section that examines the tractors that would go to the land and crash through it. It annihilates everything in its way. This section is a theoretical clash between the sharecropper and the banks. The banks need to assume control over the land to get more cash-flow, yet it is hard for the ranchers to leave in light of the fact that the land has been settled by their granddads. One sharecroppers is disturbed to the point that he takes steps to shoot the driver by saying (hed) be in the window with a rifle (p. 51). Another part depicts a sharecropper that needs to leave and is cheated into paying a lot for a vehicle. Part n ine depicts the summed up families who must sell their nostalgic products at ludicrously low costs. These sections speak to the circumstances which the Joads experience very soon. The Joads must leave their property and sell the entirety of their things. Later in the novel, Grandpa takes steps to execute the tractor driver who was furrowing their territory simply like the sharecropper who

The Puritan Community in The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne - Free Essay Example

The author of The Scarlet letter, Nathaniel Hawthorne, introduces the readers to a Puritan Community. The narrator generates a society where the people of the Puritan community hide behind what their religion says they should do in order to keep their emotions undercover. The narrator expresses his attitude toward the Puritans throughout the story by how he portrays the characters, the type of language used, and the themes presented in the story. In the beginning of this story the author acts as if he respects the Puritan community in Boston, but he then becomes satiric and his criticism begins to show. The author begins with saying that the puritans are good people when just before he was recounting how grim rigidity they were. When the author says this about the people it begins to show his attitude towards them, which is they are not as good as they may seem to the outside world. Also, when the narrator says these things he is trying to prove that the Puritans are actually very cold and ruthless. In the beginning of this story the author also how judgmental the Puritans are to anyone who is not like them. In the quote, On the other hand, a penalty which, in our days, would infer a degree of mocking or ridicule, might then be invested with almost as stern dignity as the punishment of death itself(Hawthorne). In this quote the narrator is describing how one of the characters wrongdoings, Hester, was not that catastrophic, bu t the Puritan community thought that Hesters sin was very momentous that they even considered death. In this case the Puritans seem to have jumped to a settlement to punish Hester without even thinking of all of her emotions she was going through. They also did not see if anyone else could have contributed to her sin. The narrator clearly conveys to the reader that the Puritans are always quick to place blame on others. Later into the story the author also decides to criticize the Puritans because they are bigoted to anyone who does not have the same religion as them. In the story the author describes how this Puritan community has a very strong belief that anyone who is not part of their religion will burn in the pits of hell. Hawthorne describes this in the quote disporting themselves in such grim fashion as the Puritan Nature would permit, playing at going to church, perchance, or at scourging Quakers, or taking scalps in a sham-fight with the Indians (Hawthorne). This quote also reveals that the children of the Puritan community are also ill-mannered to anyone outside of their religion. These children believe if you do not follow the bibles way then you will be following a sinful pathway. The author also criticizes the communities flaws through the reverend of the Puritans. In the story the author decides to use the reverend to point out the flaws of this religious community because the revere nd presents Hesters sin when he should have guided her in the correct pathway. The author is also mocking the community when he describes how weak and bleak the male religious figure is. Throughout the whole story the author criticized the Puritan leaders the most. The narrator mocks the leaders because the the ministers are actually the worst sinners than anyone else. This is seen through his choice of language because he describes Dimmesdale as an expressive and respected person, but he commited a sin with Hester and proceeded to not confess. When Dimmesdale admits his sin everyone is in incredulity because they believe he is perfect. The author states The minister well knew- subtle, but remorseful hypocrite that he was!, this quote shows that it is not that he did not want to own up to his in, it is impossible for him to own up to his sin because everyone in the church doesnt not believe he could do anything sinful. Overall, thought this story the reader can get the idea that the authors attitude towards the puritans is very pessimistic. The reader is able to figure this out due to the author portrays certain characters like the reverend. Also, the reader can get this attitude from the author through his choice of diction presented throughout the story.

Trends in Family Formation Supporting Same Sex Marriage

Trends in family formation are crucial in determining the kind of families that will exist in future generations. It is fact that the father- mother kind of families that have existed for many generations maintained over the years due to the belief that they were the ideal type of family set up. However, the trends in family formation today are changing as a growing number of families are experiencing several challenges such as divorce, single parent situations, financial problems, legal battles over custody and wealth and infidelity, among other challenges. These have caused young people to question whether the traditional way of doing things is practical in the twenty first century and many do not intend on following their parents’†¦show more content†¦Parental abuse therefore contributes to the rates of same sex marriages. Roberts (2005) brings out that sexual conduct and family trends are additionally growing less traditional and are growing more tolerant to diver sity. This diversity on the other hand refers to matters of non marital parenting, non marital cohabitation and matters of divorce. The modern trend of non marital cohabitation is a great factor that encourages young people to practice abnormal behavior. Because the society has become tolerant to people living together without being married, it is common practice for people to have multiple sexual partners. This in turn has made some people to feel unsatisfied with heterosexual relationships especially when none of the former partners ever met their expectations. This happens especially for women who claim that men cannot satisfy their diverse needs and so end up looking for other women who can understand what they go through. The modern trend of viewing sexual satisfaction as a requirement for a happy relationship leads many people into homosexuality in an attempt to fulfill their sexual needs. Gender equality has furthermore made women to believe in the notion that â€Å"what men can do women can do better†. Women have become more confident and as a result gender roles have changed even in the family set up (Roberts, 2005). The Obesity Hunger Paradox By Sam Dolnick - 966 Words

According to Sam Dolnick in his article â€Å"The Obesity-Hunger Paradox,† majority of Americans have an incorrect view on what hunger and obesity actually look like in our country. Hunger, he describes, is seen in â€Å"ragged toddlers† and â€Å"rail-thin children† living in the dirty dark conditions caused by poverty (219). Obesity, on the other hand, gives a completely different picture filled with it’s own slew of negative stigma. Whether it be in media or only in people’s perceptions, Obese individuals are portrayed as gluttonous, dangerously overeating or otherwise always thinking of food.Commonly because of all the food they eat, obese people also must be well off, living stable enough incomes to support their â€Å"food-addiction† and probably sit around all day. But if they don’t understand the basics of how food works, they must be stupid too, right? Basically the American view on obesity is anyone that appears or is obese must be dumb, sloth like with enough money to support the expense of gallons of ice cream a week. But, without explicitly implying it, Dolnick proves this image is far from the truth. Dolnick cites a survey that centered the country’s hungriest or rather most â€Å"food insecure† people to low-income neighborhoods of the South Bronx. In this survey, â€Å"nearly 37 percent of residents† located in the region encompassing the South Bronx, â€Å"said they lacked money to buy food at some point in the past 12 months†. Porter Five Forces Analysis Free Essays

Porter five forces analysis  is a framework for industry analysis and business strategy development formed by  Michael E. Porter  of  Harvard Business School  in 1979. It draws uponindustrial organizationeconomics  to derive five forces that determine the competitive intensity and therefore attractiveness of a  market. We will write a custom essay sample on Porter Five Forces Analysis or any similar topic only for you Order Now Attractiveness in this context refers to the overall industry profitability. An â€Å"unattractive† industry is one in which the combination of these five forces acts to drive down overall profitability. A very unattractive industry would be one approaching â€Å"pure competition†, in which available profits for all firms are driven to  normal profit. Five forces Threat of new competition Profitable markets that yield high returns will attract new firms. This results in many new entrants, which eventually will decrease profitability for all firms in the industry. Unless the entry of new firms can be blocked by  incumbents, the abnormal profit rate will tend towards zero (perfect competition). * The existence of  barriers to entry  (patents,  rights, etc. The most attractive segment is one in which entry barriers are high and exit barriers are low. Few new firms can enter and non-performing firms can exit easily. * Economies of product differences * Brand equity * Switching costs or  sunk costs * Capital requirements * Access to distribution * Customer loyalty  to established brands * Absolute cost * Industry profitability; the more profitable the industry the mor e attractive it will be to new competitors. Threat of substitute products or services The existence of products outside of the realm of the common product boundaries increases the  propensity  of customers to switch to alternatives. Note that this should not be confused with competitors’ similar products but entirely different ones instead. For example, tap water might be considered a substitute for Coke, whereas Pepsi is a competitor’s similar product. Increased marketing for drinking tap water might â€Å"shrink the pie† for both Coke and Pepsi, whereas increased Pepsi advertising would likely â€Å"grow the pie† (increase consumption of all soft drinks), albeit while giving Pepsi a larger slice at Coke’s expense. * Buyer propensity to substitute * Relative price performance of substitute Buyer  switching costs * Perceived level of  product differentiation * Number of substitute products available in the market * Ease of substitution. Information-based products are more prone to substitution, as online product can easily replace material product. * Substandard product * Quality depreciation Bargaining power of customers (buyers) The bargaining power of customers is also d escribed as the market of outputs: the ability of customers to put the  firm  under pressure, which also affects the customer’s sensitivity to price changes. Buyer concentration to  firm  concentration ratio * Degree of dependency upon existing channels of distribution * Bargaining leverage, particularly in industries with high  fixed cost * Buyer switching costs relative to  firm  switching costs * Buyer information availability * Availability of existing substitute products * Buyer  price sensitivity * Differential advantage (uniqueness) of industry products * RFM  Analysis Bargaining power of suppliers The bargaining power of suppliers is also described as the market of inputs. Suppliers of raw materials, components, labor, and services (such as expertise) to the  firm  can be a source of power over the firm, when there are few substitutes. Suppliers may refuse to work with the firm, or, e. g. , charge excessively high prices for unique resources. * Supplier switching costs relative to  firm  switching costs * Degree of differentiation of inputs * Impact of inputs on cost or differentiation * Presence of substitute inputs * Strength of distribution channel * Supplier concentration to  firm  concentration ratio * Employee solidarity (e. g. labor unions) Supplier competition – ability to forward vertically integrate and cut out the BUYER Ex. : If you are making biscuits and there is only one person who sells flour, you have no alternative but to buy it from him. Intensity of competitive rivalry For most industries, the intensity of competitive rivalry is the major determinant of the competitiveness of the industry. * Sustainable  competit ive advantage  through  innovation * Competition between online and offline companies * Level of  advertising  expense * Powerful  competitive strategy * Flexibility through customization, volume and variety How to cite Porter Five Forces Analysis, Papers

His chief point seems to be that since life abounds with hazards of assorted sorts ( cancer-inducing elements in the environment, the hazard of being hit by a truck ) we shouldn # 8217 ; t be concerned about the possibility of adding another one to the list. He suggests biotechnology is an unstoppable world, with half of U.S. soya beans planted this twelvemonth to GE seeds, every bit good as half of Canada # 8217 ; s canola harvest. He could hold added the huge land areas of genetically modified ( GM ) cotton, maize and murphies turning in North America this twelvemonth. Such harvests are expected to treble in usage worldwide in the following few old ages, he writes. We will write a custom essay sample on Biotechnology In Food Essay Research Paper REG or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page The projections quoted by Prof. Mitchell may non happen. The European Union will non accept GM merchandises, and this is doing awful selling jobs for North American husbandmans. It is going obvious we can non coerce Europeans to take such merchandises, even though Canada and the U.S. are utilizing the World Trade Organization ( WTO ) in an attempt to make so. Most big European and British supermarket ironss have removed GE merchandises from their shelves, and the largest European nutrient processors ( Nestle and Unilever ) will no longer utilize GM merchandises. All this is being reflected in the market # 8212 ; non-GM nutrients are now selling at a higher monetary value than genetically altered harvests. And there is a scramble by husbandmans to happen non-GM seed for seting following twelvemonth # 8212 ; there may non be plenty to run into the lifting demand. Mitchell tells us GM harvests will cut down the usage of weedkillers and insect powders. In fact, the whole point of GM soybean and canola is to let any sum of Monsanto # 8217 ; s weed killer # 8220 ; Roundup # 8221 ; to be sprayed on them without harming the harvest. Biotech corporations have engineered the of course happening Bt insect powder into every cell of harvests of murphies, maize and cotton, even though they know this guarantees Bt will be useless in a really few old ages as insects resistant to it quickly multiply. Organic agriculturists will hold lost the lone insect powder they are allowed to utilize. And recent research has shown pollen floating from a maize harvest into which Bt has been engineered will kill non-target species such as the Monarch butterfly. # 8220 ; Genetic impetus # 8221 ; or # 8220 ; familial pollution # 8221 ; into non-GM harvests or weedy relations is turning out to be much more prevailing and its deductions more serious than biotech research workers predicted. Mitchell says familial technology can be expected to assist feed a hungry universe. This everyday claim of the biotechnology industry is profoundly resented in developing states, where it # 8217 ; s well-known the existent causes of hungriness are poorness and unjust nutrient distribution. In any instance, most GE harvests produce less nutrient than do normal seeds — about seven per cent lower in the instance of the 1998 U.S. soybean harvest. In a peculiarly baronial part to the alleviation of universe hungriness, the biotech industry programs to offer husbandmans seeds that die after bring forthing one harvest, coercing them to return to the company for new, expensive seed each twelvemonth. # 8220 ; To fulfill authorities ordinance, such harvests are strictly tested to find hazard, # 8221 ; writes Mitchell. Surely he knows that, in fact, no research has been done anyplace on the consequence of GE nutrients on worlds. The British Medical Association has warned the U.K. authorities non plenty is known about these nutrients to let them on the market. In Canada, nevertheless, we have adopted the philosophy of # 8220 ; significant equality # 8221 ; # 8212 ; if it looks like a murphy it is a murphy, and no farther questions are necessary. Prof. Mitchell advises us to seek out the Health Canada Web site in order to be assured of the safety of # 8220 ; novel nutrients, # 8221 ; as genetically altered merchandises are called. That # 8217 ; s a good suggestion # 8212 ; at the site, you will happen that a corporation wishing to market a # 8220 ; novel nutrient # 8221 ; need non seek blessing from Health Canada. It has simply to advise the section of its purposes 45 yearss before selling the merchandise, along with informations guaranting its safety. Health Canada can inquire for more information if it wishes. And that # 8217 ; s it # 8212 ; there is no proving of such nutrients in public research labs. If an independent scientist ( Prof. Mitchell, for illustration ) wished to look into that information, he would hold to utilize the freedom of information procedure to acquire it, and even so it would merely be released if the corporation in inquiry agreed. In the scientific procedure, research workers usually publish their consequences so co-workers around the universe can verify or confute their consequences, or utilize them as a springboard from which to press the work farther. In biotech research, the war cry is secrecy. You don # 8217 ; t print without corporate permission, and you surely don # 8217 ; t print anything that might reflect unfavorably on the merchandise the company is forcing. There are surveies demoing corporate support is a really effectual manner of guaranting research will be favorable to the patronizing company # 8217 ; s merchandises. Finally, there is the impact of familial technology on modern agriculture. The merchandises of GE require high-input, high-capital operations, and are designed to ease large-scale, continuous-cropping monocultures. This is the antithesis of sustainable agribusiness in which harvest rotary motions, care of dirt construction and birthrate, and natural pest-control methods are valued. Biotechnology in agribusiness is, of class, the antonym of organic agribusiness, and public concerns about it will rush the already phenomenal addition in demand for organic green goods.

What Is The Human Genome Project Essays - Genetics, Genomics

What is the Human Genome Project? The Human Genome Project (HGP) is an international research program designed to construct detailed genetic and physical maps of the human genome, to determine the complete nucleotide sequence of human DNA, to localize the estimated 80,000 genes within the human genome, and to perform similar analyses on the genomes of several other organisms used extensively in research laboratories as model systems. This project is estimated to take 15 years to complete from October 1990 and has already cost the U.S. 2.5 billion dollars. The scientific products of the HGP will comprise a resource of detailed information about the structure, organization and function of human DNA, information that is the basic set of inherited instructions for the development and functioning of a human being. What is the overall goal of the Project? In September, advisory committees at DOE and NIH approved new 5-year goals aimed at completing the Human Genome Project two years earlier than originally planned in 1990. The new plan, published in the October 23, 1998 issue of Science, covers fiscal years 1999-2003 and calls for generating a working draft of the human genome DNA sequence by 2001 and obtaining the complete and highly accurate reference sequence by 2003. A new goal focuses on identifying regions of the human genome that differ from person to person. Although the vast majority of our DNA sequences are the same, scientists estimate that humans are 99.9% identical genetically. These DNA sequence variations can have a major impact on how our bodies respond to disease, environmental insults, such as bacteria, viruses, toxins, drugs and other therapies. Other major goals outlined in the plan include exploring the functions of human genes using methods that include comparing human DNA sequences with those from organisms such as the laboratory mouse and yeast. Then they must address the ethical, legal, and social issues surrounding genetic tools and data, develop the computational capability to collect, store, and analyze DNA. If successful, the completion of the human DNA sequence in 2003 will be the 50th anniversary of Watson and Crick's description of the fundamental structure of DNA. Already revolutionizing biology, genome research provides a vital thrust to the increasing productivity and pervasiveness of the life sciences. Current and potential applications of genome research address national needs in molecular medicine, waste control and environmental cleanup, biotechnology, energy sources, and risk assessment. Scientific Processes Chromosomes, which range in size from 50 million to 250 million bases are broken into very short pieces. Each short piece is used as a template to generate a set of fragments that differ in length from each other by a single base (template preparation and sequencing reaction steps). Now the fragments in a set are separated by gel electrophoresis. Then fluorescent dyes allow separation of all four fragments in a single lane on the gel. The final base at the end of each fragment is identified (base calling step). This process recreates the original sequence of As, Ts, Cs, and Gs for each short piece generated in the first step. Current electrophoresis limits are about 500-700 bases sequenced per read. Automated sequences analyze the resulting electropherograms and the result is a four-color chromatogram showing peaks that represent each of the 4 DNA bases. After the bases are read by a computer, another computer is used to assemble the short sequences in blocks of about 500 bases each, called the read length into long continuous stretches that are analyzed for errors, gene-coding regions, and other characteristics. Finished sequence is submitted to public sequence databases, such as GenBank. Now The Human Genome Project sequence data is made free to anyone around the world who would like to view it. Benefits of the completed Project This project will be a great jump in understanding human genes which will provide us with many answers we would like to know, and many that we haven't thought about yet. Genome maps of other organisms will provided so we can compare them to the human genome and let us compare and understand other biological systems. Information generated and technologies developed will revolutionize future biological explorations. Genes involved in various genetic diseases will be found, and further studies will lead to an understanding of how those genes contribute to genetic diseases. Among these diseases will be the genes involved in cancer. Medical practices will be altered when new clinical technologies based on DNA diagnostics are combined with information coming from genome maps. Researchers will be able to identify individuals predisposed to particular diseases and come up with therapeutic practices based on new classes of drugs, immunotherapy techniques, avoidance of environmental conditions that may trigger disease, and possible

4 Different Ways to Choose Your Music Essay Topics

4 Different Ways to Choose Your Music Essay TopicsIf you are writing a music essay, there are four ways to choose your music essay topics. The essay topics chosen for your essay will influence the format and style of your essay. Here are four music essay topics to choose from:First, music essays have become more popular these days because students are now becoming more concerned about academic achievements. It is important that the student learns about music through their own unique perspective. Because many music courses include examples of each type of music, it is a good idea to explore some of the genres that are practiced in today's world. For example, a student might decide to go to a rock concert or an opera for their musical experience.Second, music essay topics can be about the trends in music, especially if the topic you are writing is about the appreciation of one genre. For example, if you are writing about a songwriter, or a band, you can make a point about the trend in the music industry. Also, you could write about some of the specific qualities of the song or artist that made the music famous, such as the lyrics.Third, if you want to get into the subject of music, you may want to consider writing about the best musical quotes in history. For example, if you happen to have a favorite song, you can discuss how it influenced other artists, and how their musical taste changed. Also, if you are writing about your favorite artist, then you can discuss their career. When talking about the best songs ever written, you can also talk about their influence on the artists who came after them.Fourth, there are many styles of essay topics that are utilized by different classes. For example, if you want to write an English essay on Shakespeare, you would want to research how the history of the English language is influenced by Shakespeare. Additionally, if you want to write an essay on music, then you would want to learn about the style and influence of music. For example, the popularity of songs like 'New York, New York' has left a huge mark on contemporary pop culture. Finally, make sure that you do not cover all the different types of essay topics before beginning your essay. In fact, you should only study a single type for at least a couple of weeks, so that when you reach the end of your course, you will be familiar with the styles. Additionally, you should have a writing sample and practice those samples until you get them perfect. As you can see, there are four different ways to choose your music essay topics. Remember that your topics can change over time. The last thing you want to do is to forget that essay topics you used, so be sure to make a list as you move through your course.

Is pride and prejudice a feminist novel essays

Is pride and prejudice a feminist novel essays A woman who fights for the rights and equality of woman with men though she had to live with inequality and injustice in her own life is a feminist. In this regard, Jane Austen, the author of pride and prejudice proves herself to be a clear feminist. To prove her feminity, Austen had used this novel of hers as a tool to portray her views on the unequal and unjust society of men where woman had always been sidelined, and she does this through the different aspects of the content in her novel regardless of what Austen witnessed in her own life. It is rather what she had experienced in her own life, Austen had tried to put forward and voice out. Therefore this essay shall focus on Austen as being a feminist writer. Some of the feminist issues both generally and those that are found in pride and prejudice... Jane Austen is without any doubt a feminist writer for she speaks highly about feminist issues by creating characters, incidents, story, theme and so on with internalized norms of feminity which are nowhere more prevalent than in pride and prejudice, but there is the fact that she lives with inequality and injustice in her own world (society). Though it does not normally hold truth that what an artist writes about may have actually happened in ones life, as writings are normally done for an audience or for readers and sometimes the works are written from an audience perspective, but in Austen case things seem to be realistic in her own life. The eighteenth century world in which Austen lived seems to us an uncomfortable society with a overemphasis on doing and saying the right and the proper things(course book: 1998:38-44). Here education was mainly for the males and only domestic chores were considered right for the woman. As from Austen own biography it is told that Austen brother s had good jobs, (two as naval officers and one as admiral) which proves that they must have had good education for such jobs. However it is n...

What to do with a Bad Book

What to do with a Bad Book Weve all read them. The books not edited well enough. The books that probably shouldnt have been published. The books that made you scratch your head wondering what the author was thinking. â€Å"Life is too short to read books that Im not enjoying.† ~Melissa Marr â€Å"Be as careful of the books you read, as of the company you keep; for your habits and character will be as much influenced ~Paxton Hood Many of my friends say they cannot put a book down without reading it all the way through, in hopes the book redeems itself. Others say they read at least half the book, giving the author the chance to find the story. Sorry, I dont have the time. It frustrates readers when we spend our hard-earned spare time, as well as the money, only to feel weve wasted both. Thats why we often wait until someone we trust has vetted it, or it hits some best-seller list because we invest. Its why we read the sample pages on Amazon or Kindle. But I have a suggestion. If you indeed are a writer with goals to improve, if you hope one day to publish a story of your own, then next time a bad book falls into your lap, read it anyway. And as you go, mark it up. You dont care if you write in a bad book. You wont pass it on anyway. Note the bad dialogue, lack of internal monologue, poor flow, shallow characterization. Cross out the character that really didnt propel the story, and embellish the setting. Add scent where there is none, and chop out the words that stood in the way of a crisp point. Business Ethics Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Business Ethics - Assignment Example At will employment can be defined as one in which the employee is free to quit from the job at any given point of time and the employer as well is free to terminate an employee for any reason at any given point of time except that the reason for termination cannot be an illegal one such as retaliation, discrimination and violation of public policy. Thus an employer does have any legal obligation as such to an employee prior to termination. At will employee may get terminated even for the most whimsical reasons, also an employer is free to change the employment terms such as compensation and job responsibility at his will. At will employee’s employment is held as a voluntary action and under such an employment, the employee cannot be forced to work and an employer cannot employ them for an indefinite time (DelPo & Guerin, p. 34). However, there is a difference between legal and ethical obligations. Although legally an employer might not have an obligation towards his at will em ployee but ethically he might have as it is related to the morality of that person. However, since every person has his or her own sense of ethics therefore, it is hard to define what set of ethical obligation does an employer will have for his employee under at will employment. Set forth a policy concerning romance in the workplace It is necessary for an organization to issue policies for couples in work place. In order to protect against claims of nepotism, favoritism and sexual harassment, organization must adopt policies on workplace dating. These policies stipulate the types of intimate relationships which are acceptable in the workplace and also mention those which are not and violate the office decorum. Some organizations provide clear code of conduct guidelines to its employees which are expected to be followed at work place. The guidelines pertain to display of affection in public and also disclosure of relationship to the management. The violation of the guidelines of work place dating policy by couples can pose a serious threat to the employee involved. Organization can go for informal counseling to formal interventions such as transfers, written warnings and also termination. According to Karl and Sutton employers favor a stricter policy when performance of couples suffers or the romance becomes noticeable to all the members. Also management should not take any action when a couple’s performance does not suffer due to the relationship or rather shows improvement. In absence of formal work place romance policy, it is the duty of the manager to keep his eyes open so that the relationship or the romance does not hamper the general workflow. The dating policies vary from one organization to another thus it is necessary for employees to familiarize with both informal and written policies (Waldron & Kassing, p.120). Define insider trading. Over Expansion Of Money Supply Economics Essay

Over Expansion Of Money Supply Economics Essay Inflation is commonly understood as a situation of considerable and quick general increase in the prices of the currency over a period of time. The general prices are measured through price indices. The trend of prices reveals the course of inflation or deflation. Inflation is statistically measured in terms of percentage increase in the price index- usually a year or a month. Economist Harry Johnson defines as a substained rise in price. Inflation rises because of rise in the price of the imported commodities like oil, gold, etcà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦. Effects of Inflation: Middle class family will be in trouble if a price of things rises faster than their income. Inflation reduces the value of an investment if returns are inadequate to compensate. Attack of Inflation often goes hand in hand with inflamed economy. Sustained inflation also has long-term effectsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦. If money is losing its value than businessmen and investors will not invest money for long time. This effects on nations productive capacity. It can cause a rapid economic slow-down. Types of inflation: There are main 5 catagories which devides inflation in several parts. According to rate of inflation According to nature of time-period of occurance According to the scope or coverages According to governments reaction According to the causes According to the rate of inflation: Moderate inflation-(a) creeping inflation (b) walking inflation Running inflation Galloping inflation Hyper inflation Moderate inflation: When prices rise by less than 10% (single digit inflation rate) per annum, running inflation occurs. According to Prof. Samuelson, it is a stable inflation and not serious economic problem. it doesnt interrupt the economic balance. Peoples expectations remain more or less stable in moderate Inflation. Interest rate is never too low or -ve in this situation so money plays its role as a future investment tool. Creeping Inflation: When price rises not more than 3% it is called creeping inflation. It is the mildest form of inflation and also known as a mild inflation or low inflation. Walking Inflation: When the rate of rising prices is more than the creeping inflation is known as walking Inflation. When prices rise more than 3% but less than 10% per annum than its walking inflation. Running Inflation: When the movement of prices speed up rapidly, running inflation emerge. Running inflation may record more than 100% rice in a decade. Thus, when prices rise more than 10% a year, it is called Running Inflation. Double-digit inflation of 10-20% per annum is called running inflation. Galloping Inflation: If prices rise by double or triple digit inflation rates it is called galloping inflation. When prices rise more than 20% and less than 1000%, galloping inflation occurs. It is also referred as JUMPING Inflation. India is facing this inflation since second 5 year plan period. It is very serious problem. It causes economic distortions and disturbances. Hyper Inflation: In this case, prices rise every moment and there is no limit to the height to which prices might rise. Therefore, it is difficult to measure its scale as prices rise by fits and starts. In statistic terms when prices rise more than 1000% it is caalled Hyper Inflation. There is atleast a 50% price rise in a month so that in year it rises about 130 times. It represet the pitiable fall in peoples purchasing power. It is generated by immese monetary disorder. It is monetary disease. The velocity circular of money increases very fast. Causes of Inflation: Increase in money supply: Inflation is caused by an increase in the supply of money which leads to increase in demand.higher the growth of nominal money supply, higher the inflation. Increase in disposable income: When disposable demand increases demand will increase which will emerge inflation. Over expansion of money supply: Remarkable degree of correlation between the increase in money supply and the rise in the price level mayb be observed. Increase in Exports: When the demand for domestically produced goods increase in foreign country raises the earnings of the industries producing export commodities. Cost-push Inflation: Here the supply of goods and services are stopped for some or other reason while the demand remains unchanged. This push is cost. Generated by the factors like wages, profit and material cost in turn this increases the cost of production and ultimately the price of product and services. Demand-pull Inflation: Here peoples demand is continuosly rising and the supply is unchanged or same. Here people are ready to pay for the demanded goods to satisfy their need. Calculation of inflation: Inflation can be calculated by many methida but main 3 methods areà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦. CPI- Consumer Price Index WPI- Wholesale Price Index PPI- Product Price Index CPI- Consumer Price Index measures changes in the price level of  consumer goods  and  services  purchased by households. It can be used to index the real value of wages, salaries, pensions, for regulagting prices and for deflacting monetory magnitudes to show changes in real value. CPI=updated cost/base period cost*100 WPI- Wholesale Price Index WPI is the price of a representative basket of wholesale goods. The indian WPI figure is released every 10 days and influances stock and fixed priced markets. WPI focuses on the price of goods traded between corporations rather than goods bought by consumers which is measured by CPI. The purpose of the WPI is to monitor price movements that reflect supply and demand in industry, manufacturing and construction. In India WPI is the indicator for inflation rate. PPI- Product Price Index This index measures the pressure on producers due to change in cost of raw -materials. Inflation Rate = (Po-P-1)*100/P-1 Here, Po= the present average price of goods and services. P-1=the price of the products and services existed last year. Trend of inflation since 1991 to 2012 Year Annual Rate 1990-1991 13.81 1991-1992 11.88 1992-1993 6.31 1993-1994 10.24 1994-1995 10.22 1995-1996 8.98 1996-1997 7.25 1997-1998 13.17 1998-1999 4.84 1999-2000 4.02 2000-2001 2.72 2001-2002 3.8 2002-2003 3.4 2003-2004 5.4 2004-2005 6.4 2005-2006 4.4 2006-2007 5.3 2007-2008 4.7 2008-2009 12.44 2009-2010 10.2 2010-2011 9.4 2011-2012 1.4(till July) Reasons of the Inlation in 1990s: Increase in international oil price. Natural disasters like drought or flood showed an ebbing trend. The main problem of inflation came to head in August 1990. When iraq invaded Kuwait the prices of oil doubled in international market. Trade deficit in 1991 rose to 15600 cores. India borrowed from IMF. C:UsersmaitriDownloadsindia-inflation-rate.png (source: www.google.com) Reasons for Inflation in early 20th century: Increase in oil prices twice during the period. Adverse effects of deficiency of agricultural products led to increase in price ofà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦ Oilseeds and Edible oil. In 2008, Inflation was because of rise in fuel prices, and rise in prices of primary articles. Global food prices also registered a marked rise during this period. Trend of Inflation rates since 1991-2012: In 1990-91, the inflation rate rose by 12.1% and got constant at double digits in consecutive year it means India faced Running Inflation. Similarly Running Inflation India faced until Inflation rate fall to 5% in 1995-96. In 1998-99, there was again rise in prices and inflation was there. In 2002, Inflation was @ its low rating 1.6% but the upward trend become smooth and again the inflation became a cause for concern in the year 2004 when the point to point rise in inflation was 7.7%. In 2006, the Inflation was so high till the starting months of 2007. In 2008, infltion was there because of rose in price of oil and primary articles. Food inflation was there in 2008 as India is the primary importer of the food among the world. In 2009, food grain prices continued to be culprit behind the raising inflation year 2009. There was a great fall from 2008 to 2009 and it was -0.34% if there is negative inflation rate that means purchasing power of people increase but there is lack of supply. In 2010, there was rose in average rate by 1.64% and in 2011 there was rose of 3.16%. Correlation between gold price, crude oil price and dollar: Relation between gold and dollar: Gold and dollar both are global currancies. Many national banks hold dollars as a reserve currency. They both are considered stable and strong. If people are worried for the dollar which will may fall iin future than they should invest in gold. The relationship between both of them is inverse. Buying gold and selling dollar will have the effect of moving both prices inversly. As the dollars exchange value falls, it takes more dollar to buy gold so dollar gold price rises. When dollars exchange value rises due to any reason it takes fewer dollar to buy a gold. Gold and dollar relationship is strategic but not tactical. Dollar weknesses always turn into gold strength (in long term) but (in short term) gold and dollar both may can fall or rise together. When inflation rises people buy gold which make golds price up. Weakness of dollar make gold strong in long term scenerio and in short-term scenerio there maybe a condition that dollar and gold will rise and fall together. Whenever inflation comes people buy more and more gold which automatically rise the price of gold. Realtionship between Crude oil prices and dollar: (Chart from 1977 to 2003) Year Yearly Average 1991 $20.19 1992 $19.25 1993 $16.74 1994 $15.66 1995 $16.75 1996 $20.46 1997 $18.97 1998 $11.91 1999 $16.55 2000 $27.40 2001 $23.00 2002 $22.81 2003 $27.69 2004 $37.41 2005 $50.04 2006 $58.30 2007 $64.20 2008 $91.48 2009 $53.56 2010 $71.21 2011 $87.48 2012 $83.7 (estimated) Recent trend of crude oil and dollar: (8/18/2012) DX_CL_Correlation.jpg Increasing oil price results in increase of inflation. It impacts economy negatively. Higer oil prices are reflected in virtually every finished product as well as food and commodities in general. Crude oil is mainly traded in US dollar and when US dollar prices weakens the crude oil participants push the price of crude higher on the expectations. Effects on demand: Oil purchases are paid in dollars. However demand is dependednt on the domestic price of country which always fluctuate with chnages in dollar. So dollar depreciation reduces the oil price in domestic currancy. This leads to an increase in their real income and an increase in their oil demand. Therefore, the dollar depreciation a priori has a positive impact on oil demand and should contribute to raise the price. Effects on supply: Dollar changes affect the price as supposed by the producers less than the one apparent by demanders. Dollar depreciation can activate inflation and income in oil producer countries, the currencies which are linked to US dolalr. The increase in inflation and the decrease in purchasing power reduce the real disposable income and therefore the income available for drilling, everything else equals. Overall, a dollar depreciation may result in a reduction in oil supply. Overall, depreciation of dollar causes an increase in oil demand and a reduction in supply, mainly on the long run, which tends to boost oil price. Realtionship between Gold, Crude oil and dollar in inflation: An increase in oil price resukts in inflation which affects the countries those importing oil.it affects the prices in general economy. According to a study, the global resource of oil is depleting at an annual rate of 6 per cent while demand is growing at an annual rate of 2 per cent. Era of cheap oil is over now but now we have to see impact of oil prices on dollar and gold. Up to 1971 central banks were giving facility of converting dollar into gold. When this facility was removed, oil producing countries converted dollar into gold. There is positive relation between gold and oil since last 5 years. With recent increase in oil, relationship between gold n oil is not moving in cycle. if the price of oil increase due to supply and demand mismatch and dollar declines than gold/silver price will increase.

Law and Order Essay

In class, we watched the first twenty minutes of Law and Order episode â€Å"God Bless the Child†. The Episode starts with the parents of a young girl, that is deathly ill and in dire of medical assistance, and the parents won't use modern medicine because it is against their religion. Neglecting help of modern medicine, the child eventually dies. I believe that it is ridiculous that a parent will not help their own child and let them die when help is all around.I think prayer does not relinquish us from an obligation to act, so on these terms I do think these parents should be trialed for the death of their child. I see prayer to be similar to hope, guidance and communication with God rather than an act. Believing that everything can be solved with prayer is ridiculous, It Is like if someone wanted to end world hunger and didn't donate but only prayed. I think prayer and acting should go hand in hand because God is not Just going to give you what you ask for, rather he will g ive you opportunities.Similar to the Joke about the lady in the flood that Ms. Ellsworth said In class, God sent a boat and a helicopter to rescue the lady but she refused. She would later die, and In Heaven, she asked God why didn't you save me, and God replied â€Å"l did, I send you a boat and a helicopter what else can I do! † I think this Joke as the same situation as the parents In Law and Order. I strongly believe that the parents should go to trial for the death of the daughter because with all the opportunities God sent them, they avoided all of them.By neglecting all of these opportunities to rescue their child, the child suffered and soon after died. It Is ridiculous that she would not simply let her daughter drink some medicine for her to get better. If she was to go and drink alcohol, then why not let her daughter get treated. It Is most disturbing when the daughter was getting worse, but the mother thinks that what they are doing Is not working and they should d o something else. Than an act. Believing that everything can be solved with prayer is ridiculous, it is like dad in the flood that Ms.Ellsworth said in class, God sent a boat and a helicopter to rescue the lady but she refused. She would later die, and in Heaven, she asked God what else can I do! † I think this Joke as the same situation as the parents in Law and after died. It is ridiculous that she would not simply let her daughter drink some daughter get treated. It is most disturbing when the daughter was getting worse, but the mother thinks that what they are doing is not working and they should do.
